An indigenous tribe has accused the federal Government of "harming the environment" and causing "substantial damage" to its landscape and indigenous people by killing hundreds of thousands of rabbits.

The Federal Government has said it is taking "concrete steps" to prevent "illegal" rabbit culling across the Northern Territory.

But a tribe that once grazed sheep and cattle in remote areas has said it will continue to fight.

Fitzgerald Creek Chief Richard Mearns says the community will continue to hunt, fishing and trade its wildlife as it did until its members were banned from harvesting, trapping or shooting rabbits.

"We're not talking about a small reduction in the numbers that we've been seeing over the years," he said.

He said some people had to be hit hard.

"We've got to be quite honest, people have been killed already — with what's to come — to save the environment."

'Unbelievable damage'

In November, Mr Mearns was involved in a three-day community demonstration over the issue, with hundreds gathered outside his compound and on his land.

"We didn't start this for nothing," he said.

He said the tribe will not be able to operate from the remote region, where it has been heavily impacted by the Rabbit cull.

In the 1990s, some 60 per cent of the world's wild rabbits lived in the Murray-Darling Basin, which is known for an abundance of plants that were wiped out in the fire when coal was burned.

A Rabbit cull in Queensland has been blamed for increasing rabbit numbers.

"There will be great damage done because what we have done is caused by the cull on the Murray-Darling, because that's what the Government has done, so it can't be stopped," Mr Mearns said.

"When this community was a big one where we had some grazing land and sheep and cattle, we had this in the community in the past, and it still exists.

"My people do the work that is essential in providing jobs, income support, housing, all of the things that go along with that.

"We are really quite upset about what the Government has done."

The National Parks and Wildlife Association (NPWA) says the cull of rabbits is a step in the right direction.

"These numbers have dropped dramatically," chief executive Greg O'Neill said.

"The community is being able to recover to the same area as it was before."
